Display Awards

The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal competition recognized the world's most energy efficient computer monitors from Samsung, LG, and Acer.

Award winning products from the European region were recognized at an awards ceremony at the IFA Fair in Berlin, Germany in September 2013. International winners were recognized at the Clean Energy Ministerial in May 2014.

Competition at a Glance

The SEAD Initiative works with manufacturers, retailers, and policymakers to showcase feature-rich, energy-efficient products that provide top-quality services while reducing energy costs. The Global Efficiency Medal competitions demonstrate the levels of efficiency that are possible today, and shine a spotlight on innovative new technologies that can further push the boundaries of efficiency and slash energy consumption.

Computer monitors account for up to 35 percent of a desktop computer’s energy consumption. In 2008, monitors used an estimated 30-40 TWh of electricity globally, equivalent to the electricity produced by 12 mid-sized coal power plants.

SEAD international award-winning products are 12-43% more efficient than monitors with similar technology. If all monitors sold were as efficient as the SEAD award-winning models, 15-20 billion kilowatt-hours of energy could be saved by 2020 – enough to power Washington, DC for nearly a year and a half.

Manufacturers of winning product are encouraged to mark winning models with the Global Efficiency Medal logo in their marketing and product websites, so that these models can be easily identified by prospective buyers.

Regional & International Winners

This international competition identified the most efficient displays in three different size categories in four geographical regions, as well as one product featuring the most efficient emerging technology globally. All entrants were required to provide samples of each nominated product so that energy efficiency claims could be verified.

International Emerging Technology Winner

The SEAD Global Efficiency Medal in the Emerging Technology category are awarded to a Samsung-produced 23.6-inch LED backlit prototype computer monitor. This monitor is 53% more efficient than comparable displays available on the market today. This award-winning monitor is expected to become commercially available worldwide within two years of this competition's close.
